Highly underdog rapper schooled a copywriter.
All about sunday:
Yesterday evening... I visited a busy park in my city to meet my good ol' college friend (who is now an underdog rapper). He's from another state, so we met after many many moons.
I was excited to see him again.
However:
Instead of talking about life, I was pumped to listen to his unreleased songs. But, when I heard it... I noticed he was jumping from one pop reference to another and (again) another.
It was interesting.
For example:
One time he talked about Kendrick Lamar, then he connected the dots to (another rapper) Nipsey Hustle, again from him to Will Smith, and so on...
It boggled me too. Because his references were so little known that an untrained ear would easily miss them.
So (naturally) I asked him how this question:
How do you know so much? How you connect the dots between them all?
"Bro, I keep myself in the game," he replied.
"I hang out with rappers. I listen to music. I study it. I know all of it. It's easy to write songs when you're connected with the pop world."
After his reply:
I couldn't help but be reminded of those copywriters who keep themselves in isolation. I was one of them. I believed I could be a good copywriter with just books. I need no copy peers. I don't have to network.
But no, I was wrong.
That's why:
Nowadays I'm always on a hunt to find new copywriters to connect with, learn from, and share tips...
Doing this:
Last week, one of my copy friends from X shared cool upwork tips to stand out from the hungry herd of other copywriters.
Moral?
Don't be a lone wolf.
If you stay a lone wolf in this copy game, soon you will see the wolf at your doors.
